Preflight Antennas, Too...
By Jared Christensen, Installation Supervisor

A good preflight inspection will reduce your chances of winding up in harm's way during your flight. But not all preflight checklists are created equal, and it's easy to overlook potential problems areas when they are omitted from the list. Rarely found on preflight checklists are antennas. Avionics in any aircraft can only perform as well as the antenna receiving or transmitting the signal, so they, too, should receive a thorough preflight inspection.

First, antenna mountings should be examined. Look for loose or missing fasteners, skin cracks or imperfections in the vicinity of the mounting surface. A loose antenna requires immediate attention. Next, look for deterioration of any seals; water will deteriorate the ground and reduce antenna effectiveness. Last, check the outer sheath for cracks and nicks in plastic or fiberglass housings that protect the antenna itself from corrosion and deterioration. Also, be sure antennas are not painted inadvertently, as paint will affect antenna performance.

Adding antennas to your inspection will help you perform a solid preflight routine every time.
