Is Your Aircraft Due For RVSM Recertification To Fly Above FL 290?
For an aircraft to be RVSM compliant, the maintenance director for each aircraft must complete an RVSM inspection and maintenance manual for that aircraft, and have the manual approved by the FAA. The time between RVSM accuracy checks varies from 12 to 24 months, depending on the manufacturer's maintenance schedule for the particular aircraft and FAA requirements.
The RVSM altimeter accuracy check is only one part of the RVSM recertification. Static ports must be checked for any deformation, and the area around the port checked for smooth airflow, and for any deformation of the proper curvature. This check varies with manufacturer and model. The procedure requires special equipment for each aircraft and, in many cases, has to be done at the manufacturer's service center. FAR 91.413 and 91.411 may also apply. An avionics shop cannot even start an RVSM accuracy test on an aircraft without the approved inspection and maintenance manual for that particular aircraft.
