Is Your Aircraft Certified To New RVSM Standards For Flight Above FL 290?
As air travel has increased, and as more and more aircraft have become capable of high altitude flight, more aircraft than ever are operating between FL 290 and FL 410 in order to gain the benefits of greater speed and fuel efficiency. As a consequence, that airspace is becoming extremely crowded.
In an effort to accommodate this additional traffic without compromising safety, new rules for reduced vertical separation minimums (RVSM) have been established and are being implemented throughout the world. The old vertical separation minimums in that airspace have been reduced from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet.
The new RVSM standards are already in effect in most other ICAO nations and will become effective in the U.S. on the proposed date of January 2005.
To operate legally between FL 290 and FL 410 under the new RVSM requirements, aircraft must be modified, tested and certified to be sure they meet the new, more stringent, RVSM standards. The new standards apply to every type of aircraft--airline, government, business, or private--of every size.
This photo shows a Kings Avionics technician performing RVSM recertification on a Gulfstream IV aircraft, using one of our precision RVSM test equipment tools. Our technicians are fully trained and authorized to test and recertify any aircraft to meet the new vertical separation standards. |

Some of today's new aircraft are being modified to meet the new RVSM standards and certified at the factory. But some other new aircraft are being modified at the factory and not certified. Owners of those aircraft must see to the certification themselves.
For the owners of many older aircraft, the choice is to buy a new aircraft that meets the new requirements or have their present aircraft modified to make them RVSM compliant. Obviously, if your aircraft can be modified and certified, you are tens of thousands of dollars ahead.
Whatever your RVSM certification needs, call us. We can help. Kings Avionics has purchased specialized test equipment and our technicians are trained and authorized to test and recertify any aircraft to meet the new RVSM standards.
Recently, a new Cessna Bravo, based in Provo, Utah, came from the factory fully equipped to meet the new RVSM requirements, but it had not been certified. We sent technicians and equipment on site, tested its equipment for RVSM compliance and completed all necessary documentation. A successful flight test was then completed with an FAA representative aboard.
We have done RVSM testing on a number of aircraft recently, and we are qualified to do RVSM testing on your aircraft, whatever it is.
