Teton Aviation Selects Kings To Partner In Major Avionics Modifications To Classic Mallard Aircraft

Teton Aviation Center, one of the fastest growing FBOs in the western United States, is located at Driggs, Idaho, about 20 miles west of Grand Teton National Park. Its facilities include a 7300 ft. runway with two GPSA approaches, a full service maintenance center, heated hangars, Warbird Cafe and Restaurant, passenger lounge, an executive conference room and other aspects of a first-class FBO. It performs both airplane and helicopter maintenance, and services both piston and turbine engines. Teton Aviation has a flight department for fixed-wing airplane and glider instruction, and also conducts scenic airplane tours and scenic glider rides.

So Kings Avionics was pleased when Teton Aviation recently invited us to participate with them in performing some major avionics upgrades to a Grumman Mallard amphibian owned by Dr. Richard Sugden, prominent physician, pilot, and former U. S. Navy Flight surgeon, who is president of Teton Aviation. The Mallard is one of several personal aircraft owned by Dr. Sugden. He found it in Victoria, Canada in 2000 and brought it to Driggs for restoration. It has since received a complete new exterior paint job, and a completely new interior.

A true One Of A Kind Aircraft the way it is restored and equipped, this Grumman Mallard is the flagship of the fleet of exceptional flyable classic aircraft maintained and operated by Teton Aviation Center, located at Driggs, Idaho.

Dr. Sugden selected Kings Avionics to repair and configure previously installed avionics, which consisted of a Garmin GNS 530 with TAWS, a GNS 430, a Century 2000 autopilot system with yaw damp, a Bendix/King KMD 850 multi-function display with the aircraft's existing radar, a Bendix/King KGP 560 TAWS, a GDL 49 datalink, cabin intercom with music and PA/chime system, NAT audio panel/intercom with tie line to the passenger cabin, a Shadin ADC fuel computer and many other associated interface and accessory units. Kings also certified both GPS systems for enroute and approach category.

The Mallard is Airline Category certified, and was designed for regional airline operations, with two pilots and ten passengers. It has retractable tricycle undercarriage, a stressed skin two-step hull, and fuel can be carried in the wingtip tanks. Teton Aviation's Mallard is fitted with two 715 shaft h. p. Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprops.

Teton Aviation also has a warbird collection that includes an N3N primary trainer, a biplane designed and built by the U. S. Navy itself; a T-28 Trojan; an SNJ; a MiG 15; a MiG17; an AlphaJet; an FJ-4B; an L-39; a T-2 Buckeye and a Grumman Albatross.

Our work on the Mallard has blossomed into a growing business relationship between Teton Aviation and Kings Avionics, which we at Kings cherish very highly. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the people at Teton Aviation on various additional projects in the future.
