What To Do If Your Transponder Fails Outside The Salt Lake City Terminal Control Area
To loosely paraphrase part of Sec. 91-143 of the Federal Air Regulations (FAR), since the Salt Lake City TCA is Class B airspace, no person may operate an aircraft in it without a functioning ATC transponder—which, within the preceding 24 months, has been tested, inspected and found to comply with appropriate parts of Sec. 91-413.
So what do you do if you need to enter the Salt Lake City TCA, but find your transponder has failed—or has not been inspected and tested in the preceding 24 months? Fortunately, FAR 91-215 allows deviations from the 413 rule. The pilot can call Approach Control at 801-325-9670, talk with the supervisor, and special arrangements can be made to enter the Salt Lake City TCA. If in flight, the pilot can use an AirCell, Flitefone, or any other telephone approved for inflight use, to call the same number.
If your transponder fails, and you need special clearance to enter the Salt Lake City TCA, call 801-325-9670. |

As the FAR points out, such special clearance is only for a one-way flight. The transponder will need to be repaired before the next flight. If this happens to you, bring your airplane to us, and since you can't leave the TCA without getting your transponder repaired, we will provide priority service.
Kings Avionics is authorized to test, inspect, repair and certify all types of transponders. If we can help you, give us a call at 801-539-8412.
